Help me support YouthCARE today
I might be ridiculously good at cooking pancakes, but what really matters is the care, connection, and consistency behind them. I’m asking for your support so I can keep showing up for students who need it most.
For 18 years, every Friday morning, I’ve served hot, fresh pancakes at school. Pancake Friday has grown into far more than a meal — it’s a safe, welcoming space where students feel known, valued, and ready to start their day. I regularly invite local community groups to join us, helping students build meaningful connections beyond the classroom.
Alongside this, I walk with families through difficult seasons, providing food hampers and practical support when life feels overwhelming. Again and again, I’ve seen how consistent care can make all the difference.
I’m passionate about being a Chaplain because I’ve witnessed the lasting impact of simply showing up — week after week, year after year. Trust is built in small moments, shared conversations, and yes, sometimes over pancakes.

More Than Pancakes: How Community Creates Belonging
Friday 8th May
I might be ridiculously good at cooking pancakes, but what really matters isn’t what’s being served — it’s who is being seen.
For the past 18 years, every Friday morning, I’ve shown up at school with hot, fresh pancakes. Over time, this simple routine has become something much bigger than breakfast. It has become a place of connection, safety, and familiarity — a space where students know they matter.
When young people are struggling with their mental health, what they often need most is not a solution, but presence. Someone who notices when they arrive quieter than usual. Someone who listens without rushing. Someone who shows up again next week — and the week after that.
Pancake Friday works because it’s consistent. Students know exactly where I’ll be and what to expect. In that predictability, trust grows. Conversations happen naturally — sometimes light, sometimes heavy — but always on the student’s terms. Over pancakes, barriers come down.
The Power of Community
Mental health challenges can be isolating. When young people feel alone, disconnected, or unseen, it can be overwhelming. One of the most powerful ways to support well-being is to surround people with community — to remind them they are not carrying things on their own.
That’s why I intentionally invite local community groups to be part of what we do. Their presence reinforces a powerful message to students: you matter to more than just your school. It helps young people experience what it feels like to belong — not because they’ve achieved something or behaved a certain way, but simply because they are valued.
I have seen firsthand how community care can lift people when their mental health feels fragile. When someone knows they are remembered, supported, and worthy of kindness, it can make a real difference.
Why This Matters
I am passionate about being a Chaplain because I have witnessed the impact of consistent care. Trust is built slowly — through shared moments, honest conversations, and regular presence. Sometimes those moments happen across a desk. Sometimes they happen in silence. And sometimes, they happen over pancakes.
Supporting YouthCARE means supporting this kind of care — relational, long‑term, and grounded in genuine connection. It means helping young people know they belong, even on the days they feel like they don’t.
Thank you for being part of a community that believes in showing up — one conversation, one moment of care, and yes, sometimes one pancake at a time 💛🥞

Well done Salome
